Morocco earthquake: 2 946 dead and thousands injured

Earthquake MoroccoA violent earthquake rocked the Marrakech region (Morocco) on the night between 8 and 9 September 2023 at 23:11 local time. The death toll stands at 2 946, with another 5 674 wounded. Local authorities estimate that 50 000 buildings were completely or partially destroyed.

This disaster brings back painful memories of the Al Hoceima earthquake in northern Morocco which claimed the lives of 628 people.

To date, the country's deadliest earthquake was the one that struck Agadir in 1960. That disaster killed more than 12 000 people.
