On 26 August 2026, forest fires broke out in several wilayas (provinces) across Central and Eastern Algeria.
Driven by strong winds, the flames rapidly spread toward populated areas, forcing several residents to evacuate their homes.
The fires have claimed 12 lives and injured 54 people, including six seriously.
According to the General Directorate of Civil Protection, 46 fires were still burning as of 7 a.m. on Thursday 27 August
Following this disaster, the Algerian government declared three days of national mourning.
