Covid-19 mutation: Denmark to cull millions of minks to prevent the spread of the virus

minkIn northern Denmark, a mutated variation of the coronavirus has infected minks. The virus was subsequently transmitted to at least 12 people. A new pandemic is feared to have started in Denmark.

The mutation has been confirmed by the State Serum Institute (SSI). According to the SSI, the new virus presents some resistance to future Covid-19 vaccines.

To prevent the spread of the Covid-19 variant, the Danish government decided to cull around 17 million mink in 1 100 farms. Restrictions have also been imposed on the 280 000 people living in north-west Denmark. Ultimately, restaurants and bars in risk areas will be closed starting from Saturday 7 November 2020.

Note: Denmark is the world's biggest producer of mink fur.
