On 14 August 2021 a violent earthquake of a 7.2 magnitude struck the southwest of Haiti. As at 18 August 2021, the disaster has left 2 189 dead, 12 268 injured and over 60 000 homes destroyed.
Three days after the tremor, the south of the country and the capital, Port-au-Prince, were hit by heavy rains brought on by tropical storm Grace.
Following these two disasters, the island's residents are faced with two perilous choices: either stay out of their homes to protect themselves from possible aftershocks from the earthquake, or take shelter from the bad weather in damaged homes and buildings.
