On the night of 16 to 17 May 2023, torrential rains fell on the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy causing landslides and major flooding.
According to the authorities, 14 rivers overflowed and 23 municipalities were flooded.
As a provisional toll, nine people have lost their lives while several others are still missing. Some 5 000 residents were evacuated.
The devastating floods came two weeks after heavy rains which followed in their turn weeks of drought. This latest natural disaster [4] has impaired the soil's ability to absorb water.
The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Imola in Emilia-Romagna that was scheduled for 21 May 2023 has been cancelled.
