Snow and freezing rain bring Europe to a standstillOn 17 January 2024, a severe cold spell accompanied by snowfall and freezing rain caused transport to grind to a halt in several European countries.

In Germany, almost 700 flights at Frankfurt airport and around 250 at Munich airport were cancelled. According to the German meteorological services, the disaster has resulted in several roads freezing over and major damage to infrastructure.

In France, poor weather conditions have caused a number of traffic accidents, while public transport has been disrupted. Several départements were placed on orange alert.

In Oslo, Norway, the cold snap led to the suspension of public transportation services, rail traffic delays and airport closures.

Severe winds and heavy snowfall have paralyzed traffic for hours in Denmark. Local authorities urged residents to stay at home, postpone appointments and work from home.
