Coverage for autonomous cars in Japan

autonomous carIn November 2020, Honda, the Japanese automaker, received certification for Level 3 autonomous driving technology. The drivers can regain control of their vehicle in case of emergency.

Honda is the first company in the world to receive such certification. The company plans to start selling the product by March 2021.

The Japanese insurers are expected to adapt to the new technology by creating specific coverage for autonomous cars. Some local insurers such as Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, Sompo Holdings and Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance are working to adapt their coverage to the specific needs of those vehicles.

In Japan, no legislation currently binds insurance companies to market this type of product.
