ECOWAS Brown Card: Over 365 226 USD paid for claims in 2017 in Cote d’Ivoire

A total of 200 million FCFA (365 226 USD) was disbursed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to pay for cross-border claims in Cote d'Ivoire in 2017. According to Balamine Dicoh, executive secretary of the Ivorian National Brown Card Bureau, the figure could increase considerably for the current year. Claims payable for the end of 2018 are estimated at 350 million FCFA (609 187 USD).

An information day bringing together insurers, road transport companies and representatives of consumer associations was organized to this effect in Abidjan. The objective is to raise awareness of the operating methods and the principle of the ECOWAS Brown Card among Ivorians.

For the record, the ECOWAS Brown Card insurance system was adopted in 1982 with a view to guaranteeing simple and fair compensation to victims of traffic accidents caused by non-resident drivers. Its sale has been made systematic in Cote d'Ivoire since June 2017 for the amount of 1000 FCFA (1.7 USD).
