National inquiry initiated by the CNA

Initiated by the Conseil National des Assurances (CNA), a national inquiry has revealed the poor affiliation of inhabitants to the natural catastrophe insurance scheme set up on the aftermath of the 2004 Boumerdès earthquake. Although the insurance of this risk is compulsory, the national underwriting rate is limited to only 10% of the population, even in the highly-exposed areas. Among the reasons invoked by the people questioned were the inadequate economic resources of households, the unknown compulsory nature of the cover and eventually the credibility deficit of insurance companies.
