Ransomware: international campaign against the REvil cybercriminal gang

revilOn 8 November 2021, the United States reported the arrest of Yaroslav Vasinsky in Poland. Vasinsky is suspected of being an affiliate* of REvil, one of the worst cybercrime gangs in business.

On the same day, the European police agency "Europol" reported arresting four other people in Romania on suspicion of being members of the same gang.

Europol added that two REvil members were arrested, one by the Kuwaiti police and the other by South Korean authorities. Both individuals were members of another disbanded cybercrime gang known as "GandCrab".

In addition to the arrests, a total of 6 million USD in cryptocurrency was seized. The criptocurrency exchange "Chatex" and three other associated companies were also sanctioned for money laundering for the hackers.

* Affiliate: a person responsible for getting ransomware into the victim's computer system for money. REvil's affiliates are accused of extorting a total of over 200 million USD.
