Road safety in France: a significant drop in road deaths in 2020

Road safetyAccording to figures released by the National Interdepartmental Observatory of Road Safety (ONISR), the number of deaths on metropolitan France's roads is down by 21.4% in 2020.

With 2 550 deaths, the past year remains the least deadly in metropolitan France since 1924 (2 246 deaths).

This drop in road deaths is the result of the reduced road traffic during the lockdown period.

In the overseas territories, the number of road deaths reached 232 in 2020, bringing the total number to 2 782 deaths.

The health crisis' impact on overseas travel is not as pronounced as it is in metropolitan France. Road deaths are declining but remain within the same range as in the last ten years.
