Success of the agricultural insurance program launched in 2012

The agricultural insurance program launched in late 2012 by the Rwandan government is a success. Nearly 12 000 farmers benefit from this cover that protects cereal crops against drought. The authorities estimate that 1000 new farmers will join this system in 2013. This plan designed for small farmers who are entitled to governmental loans for buying seeds and fertilizers. Farmers may also attend training seminars.

This insurance called "Kilimo Salama" is based on satellite measurements that record rainfall and their impact on crops. The 6% to 12% premium of the cost of seeds and fertilizer varies according to the status of plots and to their size. Swiss Re reinsures this program which is underwritten by farmers with local insurers.
