The role of insurers in the prevention of road crashes

According to the national center for prevention and road safety (CNPSR), the number of road crashes amounted to 35 199 in 2015, which claimed the lives of 4610 people and injured 55 994. More than 95% of the accidents are accounted for by human error with 87% of cases attributed to the driver’s mistakes.

While the authorities are regularly conducting awareness-raising campaigns, shouldered by civil society associations, insurers are hardly doing anything. Yet, their role is not insignificant as they have the means to incite motorists to exhibit more caution. The analysis of motorists’ behavior behind the steering wheel by means of computer programs may stand as one of the solution. Good drivers will, then, be rewarded through tariff discounts.
