Driving without insurance, 4th cause of traffic offences in France

January 15, 2019

The National Interdepartmental Observatory on Road Safety (ONISR) recorded a total of 80 395 offences for lack of insurance in 2017. The offence for lack of insurance is the 4th cause of traffic offences in France. It accounts, alone, for 13.5% of the total traffic offences, after the hit and run (29%), blood alcohol (21%) and the lack of a driver's licence (19%).

These worrying figures prompted the introduction of the insured vehicle file (FVA).

Managed by AGIRA (Association for the management of risk information in insurance) and set up as from 1 January 2019, FVA’s objective is to combat non-insurance, facilitate investigations in the event of a fleeing after accident, theft or smuggling and finally to have a better statistical knowledge of the motor fleet.

According to ONISR, 5.6% of fatal accidents and 4.4% of bodily injuries involve uninsured vehicles; figures which have been growing for about ten years.
