The Gironde department in southwestern France has been battling major wildfires since 22 July 2026.
As of 27 July 2026, the fires had already scorched 42 000 hectares of land.
More than 220 000 residents in the Bordeaux area have been forced to leave their homes, while 40 000 campers and vacationers staying at campsites have been evacuated.
Following discussions with France Assureurs, the Minister of the Economy announced that insurers will cover the temporary accommodation costs of evacuated residents.
The wildfires have destroyed 240 homes across Gironde, including 170 in the town of Le Porge.
The crisis extends beyond France. Major wildfires are also raging across other parts of Europe and the Maghreb, with Italy, Spain, Algeria, and Tunisia facing severe blazes fueled by extreme heatwaves.
