Experts stress the importance of respecting seismic standards

In an interview granted to the Algerian newspaper Le quotidien d'Oran on 13 February 2023, Mustapha Meghraoui, a world-renowned seismologist, insisted on the importance of the full and effective implementation of the anti-seismic building code, which is a preventive tool against earthquakes. Builders must in fact follow protocols which include the specific parameters of each type of structure.

Very precise calculations are made by engineers to ensure that all buildings are protected against earthquakes.

Algeria, for example, has one of the best anti-seismic building codes in the world with competent engineers, according to Mr. Meghraoui. However, this code is not being applied just like in Turkey and Italy.

The Algerian expert is calling on builders to respect the anti-seismic code to the letter in order to avoid major damage in the event of a tremor.

In California, an American state highly exposed to seismic risks, failure to comply with seismic standards is punishable by heavy prison sentences.
