Chile devastated by deadly fires

Since Friday, 3 February 2023, the center of Chile has been witnessing a series of violent fires, aggravated by wind gusts and temperatures exceeding 40°C.

The forest fires have already destroyed more than 270 000 hectares of land and 1 081 dwellings.

As of 5 February 2023, 24 people have lost their lives and 1 182 have been injured.

the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) has recorded 283 active fires, 71 of which are out of control. More than 5 000 firefighters are still battling the flames.

Several regions of the country have been declared disaster areas.
