Natural disasters in the United States: 2022 report

In 2022, the United States recorded 119 events classified as natural disasters, totaling 164 billion USD in economic losses, slightly less than the losses recorded in 2021. Insured losses were up nearly 6.5% from 2021.

hurricane harveyHurricane Ian was the biggest loss of the year with an estimated insured loss of 65 billion USD. The Category 4 hurricane made landfall at Coya Costa in western Florida on 28 September with extreme winds of up to 240 km/h, torrential rains and a tide.

Ian resulted in 109 deaths across 19 Florida counties, making it one of the deadliest storms in recent history.
