Cyclone Belal sweeps across Mauritius

Cyclone BelalCyclone Belal has struck Mauritius on 15 January 2024, bringing torrential rains and heavy winds and triggering severe flooding. Thousands of people were left without electricity, while several cars were damaged.

Local police authorities reported that a motorcyclist lost his life in a road accident as a result of the disaster.

The Insurers' Association of Mauritius pointed out that insurance companies only cover vehicle owners with a comprehensive motor insurance policy that includes the cyclone and flood risks.

Prior to its passage through Mauritius, the cyclone had already struck Réunion Island, claiming at least four lives and causing extensive material damage.
