Natural catastrophes burden insurers in Q1 2023

Natural disastersThe first estimates made by the broker Aon suggest that natural disasters are likely to generate 63 billion USD worth of economic damages during the first quarter of 2023. 15 billion USD of this amount would be borne by insurers.

The violent storms in the United States and the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria are considered as the most expensive disasters with insured losses amounting to 5.4 billion USD and 3.5 billion USD respectively.

The first three months of 2023 were also marked by the Auckland floods and cyclone Gabrielle in New Zealand. These two events could potentially cost the insurance market 2 billion USD.
