Virtual reality: issues and insurance

VRThe marketing of virtual reality (VR) headsets saw a significant increase in 2021. This trend has continued into 2022 and is expected to increase further in the future.

Like any other product, the massive use of this new technology could generate negative impacts on digital space and metaverse enthusiasts.

Indeed, some users get carried away by their emotions when using this type of device, causing material damage in the home (deterioration of walls, breakage of furniture and televisions, etc.). Insurers are therefore concerned by the events that affect insurance policies.

As an example, UK insurer Aviva has seen a 68% increase in claims related to virtual reality experiences since 2016, when tech companies began selling VR headsets. The average cost of a VR claim is 650 GBP (881 USD) in 2021.

Other downsides of the virtual world; sexual harassment, addiction, disrupted social life and loss of self-esteem.
