Tropical cyclone Chido hit Mayotte, a French overseas department, on 14 December 2024, with winds gusting to over 220km/h. It was the most destructive cyclone to hit the region since 1934.
The natural disaster claimed several lives and caused extensive material damage.
According to France Assureurs, several schools and homes were destroyed, leaving 100 000 residents - a third of the population - homeless.
Caisse Centrale de Réassurance (CCR) is expecting insured losses between 650 and 800 million EUR (675 to 831 million USD). At least 50% of this cost will be borne by CCR.
