On 8 June 2026, a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. The quake was followed by several aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 6.5.
The preliminary death toll stands at 46, with 17 people missing and 450 injured.
The earthquake caused buildings to collapse and triggered landslides across much of the island.
According to estimates by AM Best, the disaster is expected to generate significant economic losses, particularly due to damage to property and infrastructure.
However, insured losses would represent only a small fraction of the total damage, given the low penetration of natural disaster insurance in the country.
