Thai insurers are expecting losses to exceed 1 billion THB (29 million USD) as a result of the earthquake in Myanmar (formerly Burma), which also wreaked havoc in Thailand.
On 28 March 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar and neighboring Thailand. The tremor, which had its epicenter northwest of the Burmese town of Sagaing, was felt all the way to China.
As at 2 April 2025, the death toll in Burma alone stood at 2 700, with 4 000 injured and 300 missing. Authorities warn that the death toll could rise further.
In Myanmar, several homes, religious sites, schools and university buildings collapsed. The earthquake was the most powerful to hit the country in decades.
The disaster also affected Thailand, where nearly 20 people lost their lives when a 30-storey building under construction in Bangkok collapsed.
