UNICEF: Climate change discourages 40% of young people from having children

UNICEFAccording to a UNICEF global survey, the effects of climate change are causing 40% of young people to reconsider becoming parents. This rate stands at 43% in sub-Saharan Africa and rises to 44% in North Africa and the Middle East. Successive periods of drought and extreme heat combined with rising food prices figure among the reasons for this disinclination.

Climate shock has reduced access to food, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where 52% of respondents mentioned this issue. In the MENA region, this rate falls to 31%.

The same source shows that 34% of survey participants in North Africa and 32% in sub-Saharan Africa have seen their families' income decline significantly due to climate change. Another finding is that 35% of respondents from the MENA region say they are increasingly struggling to find clean water.
