Morocco earthquake, compensation process for victims
According to a Decree issued on 19 October 2023, the earthquake that struck the province of Al Haouz in Morocco on 8 September 2023 has now been classified as a catastrophic event.
Following this decision, a compensation process was set in motion to repair the damage sustained by those affected, whether they are insured or not. The Decree concerns the Marrakech prefecture and five affected provinces: Al Haouz, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Ouarzazate and Azilal.
For uninsured victims, the compensation will be paid through the Solidarity Fund against Catastrophic Events (FSEC) set up in 2019 for coverage against natural disasters.
For insured victims, a claim must be filed with the relevant insurance company before 7 November 2023. This must be followed by a standard adjustment, assessment and compensation process.
Data from the Supervisory Authority of Insurance and Social Welfare (ACAPS), indicates that coverage against catastrophic events will be applied according to the following model:
